Over 800 Residents go Legal with JPS in Homestead, Spanish Town – Company appeals for more compliance

October 29, 2020

846 residents and counting. That’s the total number of legalized JPS customers in Homestead, Spanish Town, in the parish of St. Catherine. Prior to April 2019, over 90% of electricity delivered to Homestead in Spanish Town was stolen. As at September 2020, illegal abstraction was down to 24% and continuing to decrease – moving the number of paying customers from 369 to 846.

The turnabout began in 2019, when JPS intervened through its Community Renewal arm, by installing pole line infrastructure throughout the area, which has widespread informal development. Having installed the infrastructure, JPS personnel held community meetings, engaged residents in door to door public education and worked through a Community Facilitator to help clarify issues around regularization and energy management.

The Company has also been involved in various outreach in the community, including a Health Fair, Back-to-School assistance, and LED bulb swaps.

Unfortunately, some members of the community are still abstracting electricity illegally, including running illegal wires to other communities.

JPS is once again appealing to residents to cease from this activity and become regularized, as it will be escalating its efforts to clamp down illegal connections, creating a safer environment for all residents.

Persons who wish to become regularized may call the Customer Care Centre @888-CALLJPS/888-225-5577 or go online@myjpsonline on Facebook or Twitter for more information.
