JPS Appeals for Help to Stop Vandalism of Transformers in St Catherine

JPS is reporting that over several weeks, there have been more than thirty incidents of vandalism of its transformers, in the parish of St Catherine. The transformers are being cut open and the core extracted, for purposes which are yet to be ascertained. The areas affected by this unlawful activity are Bernard Lodge, Salt Pond Road, Dunbeholden and Port Henderson Road in Portmore. The vandalism of the transformers has resulted in loss of electricity and sometimes water supplies, for several hours in varying locations in the Portmore Municipality.
The Company has so far spent approximately J$8 million to replace the vandalized transformers.
While JPS is working alongside the police, it is appealing to the public to be vigilant in their communities and report any strange activity around JPS’ infrastructure, especially at night.
