The 2018 CARILEC Linesman Symposium and Rodeo

The 2018 Caribbean Electric Utility Services Corporation’s (CARILEC) Linesman Symposium and Rodeo, co-hosted with St. Vincent Electricity Services Limited (VINLEC) was held on May 7-12, 2018 at Diamond, St. Vincent under the theme: “Celebrating Caribbean Linesman”.
The symposium segment of the event featured a series of training activities aimed at building capacity and sharpening expertise for the safe execution of linesman work. Topics of leadership, safety and emerging technologies were explored, with the linesmen participants heavily engaged in discussions, hands-on activities and group work. Presentations at the symposium include: Use and Care of Load Break Tools- presented by Roger May, Director of Sales at Utility Solutions Inc.; Grounding for Personal Protection- presented by Jeff Knopp, Product Manager at Hubbell Power Systems Inc.; Linesman Best Practice- presented by Justin Small, Contractor Supervisor, LUCELEC; Equipotential Earthing-presented by Lazarus Alphonse, Equipment Maintenance Supervisor, LUCELEC; “Force Logic 6T” Utility Crimper”- presented by Santiago Pava, Marketing Manager, Milwaukee Tools.
Linesmen at the 2018 CARILEC Linesman Symposium and Rodeo
The rodeo segment of the event was composed of the following events (which required a three (3) man team): Earth installation; Pole speed climb; Fuse cut out; One (1) mystery event; Hurtman rescue; and Basket ball. First place, second place and third place prizes were award for each event, additionally, there was an overall best performance for each event. A total of ten utilities comprising of fourteen teams battled for the coveted title of Champion of the Rodeo in the aforementioned six (6) events. DOMLEC, LUCELEC and VINLEC emerged as the first, second, and third place winners respectively in the experienced category, whilst LUCELEC, Rudy’s and VINLEC captured first place, second place, and third place respectively in the apprentice category.
Two new Exhibitors joined the Manufacturers’ showcase to form an already impressive line of partner supporters of the Linesman Symposium and Rodeo: HUBBELL/CHANCE, Utility Solutions; Milwaukee Tools and Buckingham, all well-known suppliers of tools and equipment to the industry.
This year, funding was provided by the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) and made it possible for nine (9) participants to take part in the weeklong event.
