Statement Passing of Odean Wood
May 12, 2018- JPS has indicated that it is with great sadness that the Company has learnt of the passing of Odean Wood, who was injured during an incident at the JPS Rockfort Power Plant in April. At the time of the incident, Wood was an employee of Williams & Smith Construction Company Limited, a contractor of JPS.
JPS President & CEO, Emanuel DaRosa, has extended his condolences to Wood’s family. “JPS is deeply saddened by the passing of Odean Wood. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and former colleagues,” he said.
Mr. DaRosa also explained that JPS had made an offer to the family’s representatives, at the beginning of May, to provide support for Wood’s continued treatment overseas, but there were some things that JPS could not have undertaken on behalf of the family. “The safety of employees, contractors and members of the public is JPS’ number one priority and a value we hold dear. Although Mr. Wood was not a JPS employee, on a humanitarian basis, JPS had agreed that we would cover the costs of air ambulance services and all required travel to the USA, as well as make a US$100,000 (J$12.5 Million) contribution towards his treatment at a facility in the USA. However, JPS was not in control of Mr. Wood’s care nor able to apply for visas on the family’s behalf, or decide which facility would provide the appropriate care. This is really a very sad outcome, and one that we definitely would not have wanted,” Mr. DaRosa said.
JPS says it has been in communication with Odean Wood’s family as well as with representatives of the family, from the time of the incident up to yesterday afternoon.
