CARILEC Occupational Health & Safety Seminar a Success

CARILEC 2019 Occupational Health and Safety Seminar was held in Saint.Lucia June 22-23, 2019, under the  theme ” Planning for Safety Excellence 30 Years and Beyond”.  This year , the OSH seminar and CEOs conference was an integrated programme where some topics, including the theme was discussed by the CEOs for both audiences. Mr. Thornley Myers of VINLEC, Peter Williams of Emera Caribbean Inc. Leroy Abraham of BVIEC, Clement Williams of SKELEC discussed the OSH and CEOs conference theme in a one-hour panel discussion. 

CARILEC OSH Committee Executives assisted in designing the seminar agenda, where they placed emphasis on environmental concerns in keeping with UN SDGs.  The issue of implementing  the  ISO 45001 standards at the utilities was in the spotlight as all of its elements were in keeping with CARILEC OSH position paper. OSH Officers from CARILEC member utilities, plan to convene a meeting on Thursday June 6. 2019 and subsequent meetings  to discuss resources and  the next steps  required for adopting the  ISO45001  standards. CARILEC has planned to pool resources from unities who have achieved the ISO45001 certification like EMERA Caribbean and FortisTCI to suport and assist in these next steps.

A number of expert speakers presented at the seminar from CARILEC member utilities, UWI Seismic Research Centre, St.Lucia Insurance Council , NEMO  and a fair percentage of  presentations covered topics mainly on the environment and its impact on employee and community health and safety.

During the seminar CARILEC OSH Committee also convened its yearly meeting on June 22, 2019 where they discussed challenges that utilities face,  as well as best practice and success stories in implementation safety standards.
