EEI WELCOMES BIDEN ADMINISTRATION EXECUTIVE ORDERS ON FEDERAL FLEET ELECTRIFICATION AND CLEAN ENERGY INFRASTRUCTURE

WASHINGTON (January 27, 2021) – Edison Electric Institute (EEI) President Tom Kuhn issued the following statement today:

“EEI and our member companies—America’s investor-owned electric companies—welcome the Biden administration’s latest executive actions to address climate change and clean energy infrastructure across the federal government.
“We are committed to getting the energy we provide as clean as we can as fast as we can, without compromising on the reliability and the affordability that our customers value. As impressive as our clean energy progress has been, and continues to be, now is the time to accelerate our efforts.
“Today’s executive orders build on the foundation laid by President Biden one week ago in his day one energy-related executive actions, and we are particularly pleased by the administration’s executive order to electrify the federal fleet. The transportation sector is the largest domestic source of carbon emissions. By accelerating transportation electrification and increasing the number of electric vehicles in the federal fleet and on U.S. roads, we can leverage the already ongoing emission reductions in the power sector to meet economy-wide carbon reduction goals.
“EEI’s member companies already are leading by example and collectively are on track to electrify more than one-third of their fleet vehicles by 2030. They are gaining critical experience along the way that will help customers design and implement their own fleet electrification plans. We look forward to partnering with the Administration and to helping the federal fleet electrify by building and optimizing the needed infrastructure.
“We also applaud President Biden for committing to double the production of renewable energy from offshore wind by 2030 and for recognizing the vital role infrastructure plays in driving and supporting the clean energy transition. Across the country, EEI’s member companies stand ready to work with the administration to identify ways to build the critical electric transmission and energy grid infrastructure we need to deliver more clean energy to customers as quickly and efficiently as possible.
“EEI’s member companies are leaders on clean energy, and carbon emissions from the U.S. power sector are at their lowest level in more than 30 years and continue to fall. With the right policies and the right technologies, a 100 percent clean energy future can be more than a goal. It can be a reality for all Americans. EEI’s member companies are well-positioned to be part of the solution to climate change, and we look forward to working with President Biden to implement today’s initiatives.”
