CATERPILLAR LAUNCHES TRAINING INITIATIVE WITH CARILEC
Following an invitation issued by Caterpillar Americas Co. CEO Bill Beitz at a dinner address during CARILECs CEOs
Symposium last year, for Associate Members to become more intimately involved in the developmental efforts of Member Utilities the Company has decided to
spear head a positive initiative in this direction in 2001. Caterpillar Inc is the worlds largest manufacturer of construction and mining equipment,
diesel and natural gas engines and industrial gas turbines. It is a Fortune 100 company ranked No. 1 in its industry with more than US$26 billion in assets.
The CEOs suggestion was for Associate Members to initiate a training offering at little or no cost to the members, providing such expertise as they possessed in support of CARILEC Member Utilities
development. Caterpillar has made a formal offer to CARILEC to provide power generation training courses at its training facility located in Miami Lakes,
Florida. The programme of training offered includes two levels of power generation training intended for technicians, operations personnel and junior engineers.
The first course goes by the title of Electric Power Generation and provides in-depth study, hands-on-activities and trouble-shooting to qualify
participants to deliver, maintain, troubleshoot and repair current production generation sets operating as single units equipped with or without the generator
mounted control panel.
The second course which goes by the title Parallel Application & Switchgear, provides much the same activity with more of a focus on generator sets in parallel with associated switchgears. While
the Secretariat is still in the process of fleshing out the details of this collaborative venture with Caterpillar with a view to circulating the full course contents and administrative arrangements very shortly, we can boldly
state at this time that we targeting the months of June & August of this year for conducting these two workshops. We hope to have more specific details on these two practical workshops before the end of this month and therefore
suggest that you continue to log on to our web site for the latest developments.
It is our earnest hope that other Associate Members will take up the challenge and in so doing strengthen existing ties between our two layers of membership thus making for a stronger and more interdependent
CARILEC.
