        CUC Opens Frank Sound Substation

CUC has energized the second in a series of newly designed indoor substations to enhance the reliability of electrical service and to accommodate future load growth in the Eastern Districts.

This new substation, which is being constructed in two stages, is located on Frank Sound Road, just north of the East End and Frank Sound junction. The energizing of Phase One provides two new distribution feeders that will serve East End and North Side.

The second phase, which will be energized in 2004, will provide for additional feeders to these two districts and will coincide with the completion of the new Frank Sound to Rum Point 69KV transmission line.  Upon completion, this new transmission line will provide a looped transmission system that will improve service reliability in the Eastern Districts.

In his remarks during the official opening September 6, Mr. Peter A. Thomson, CUC’s President and C.E.O., highlighted that the focus of the Company’s primary capital expenditure over the past few years has been the enhancement of its transmission and distribution system. “In order to ensure the reliability our customers have come to expect, investments have to be made in electrical infrastructure,” he commented.

Mr. Thomson also applauded the efforts of all involved with the completion of the substation. CUC’s Substation Strategic Alliance Partner, ABB Power T&D Company, Inc. of the USA constructed Phase One of the Frank Sound Substation in eight months at a cost of $US 3.2 m.  Hadsphaltic served as the local subcontractor and was responsible for the site preparation and civil works.  Other contractors who assisted with the project included R.W. Beck, Mastec North America, the Andro Group, B.P.C. Ltd., Magna Electric and Brent Green Landscaping.

Additionally, Mr. Thomson took the opportunity to introduce the Company’s new tree-planting programme, an initiative that is part of CUC’s ongoing commitment to the environment. In an effort to enhance safety and reliability, CUC employs an aggressive bushing programme that sometimes necessitates the cutting down of trees that encroach on its overhead lines. Through the 2 for 1 Tree Planting Programme, any tree cut down, due to service requirements, will now be replaced with two new tree plantings. This new initiative, therefore, enables the Company to replace or replenish indigenous tree species throughout the island.

Minister for Planning, Communications, Works and Information Technology, the Hon. Linford Pierson cuts the ribbon to mark the official opening of CUC’s newest indoor substation in Frank Sound.
