Crews from six (6) Caribbean
Electric Utilities are on stand-by to provide
restorative assistance to the island of Bermuda.
The island is presently getting a pounding from
the Category 3 Hurricane Fabian.
Fabian
brought winds of up to 120mph along with a powerful
tidal surge to the island on Friday, September
05, 2003.
A
source from Bermuda Electric Light Company reportedly
said that the company expected massive outages.
CARILEC,
The Caribbean Association of Electric Utilities
has as part of its member services a CARILEC Hurricane
Action Plan (CHAP), which provides the mechanisms
to facilitate rescue and restoration missions
to hurricane stricken member utilities. The plan
is presently being revised to more comprehensively
provide assistance for all natural disasters.
Belco
has been very supportive of hurricane restoration
assistance in previous years.
Past
recipients of CHAP assistance include the Bahamas
after the passage of Hurricane Floyd in 2000 and
Belize after the passage of Hurricane Keith in
2001.
